Like all processes, the processes of quality and business improvement are optimized by periodic measurement, analysis, and adjustment. Several assessment types are described below, which can be combined into larger assessments that leverage common elements to reduce costs and maximize the knowledge and insights gained. They include:

  • Infrastructure Assessments examine the organization’s tools, information, processes, and programs that support quality. They measure the diffusion and use of the quality infrastructure, and identify opportunities to refine and enhance the company-wide systems and tools available to employees.
  • Employee Surveys examine individual and group attitudes toward quality which are the foundation of a sustainable quality process. They measure employees’ internal adoption of the quality philosophy, how they are applying it in their day-to-day activities, and perceptions of their peers’ attitudes and behaviors.
  • Operational Assessments identify and prioritize the largest improvement opportunities in an operating group or business unit. They measure where quality efforts by individuals and groups are focused and whether larger opportunities are being missed.
  • Project Assessments ensure projects are structured as properly-sized tasks, assess how effectively process improvement tools are being applied, and ensure individual project work supports the solution of complex problems. They measure the structure, execution and results of improvement projects, identifying gaps in the analysis of problems that lead to sub-optimal solutions.
  • Milestone Assessments examine changes in attitudes and performance levels over time and at specific points in the quality process. They measure changes in key processes that lead to changes in key quality metrics.

In addition to identifying the opportunities noted above, assessments also uncover where the organization’s efforts are producing the greatest results. This highlights best practices, demonstrates the power of Quality Management and process improvement, and identifies opportunities to celebrate success.
